Working to address the challenges of our time

CONTENTS
  • Energy Transition & Climate Change
  • Urbanization & Infrastructure
  • Education & Qualification
We choose Challenges we can realistically tackle, then set measurable goals to guide our work.

Power it with INITIATIVES
Once a Challenge is defined, we activate and align our Initiatives — like ERLG, the Collaborative Action Platform Brazil, or RESPOND — to work toward solutions. These initiatives are our tools for change, connecting the right people, platforms, and ideas. Deliver Tangible SOLUTIONS We’re not in this for good intentions alone. Every Challenge is designed to lead to solutions — concrete, scalable outcomes that move society forward. Think innovations in cleantech, cross-industry partnerships, and new ways of collaborating to make an impact that will advance society as a whole and make it more future-proof. This approach helps us stay focused, flexible, and bold. It aligns everything we do with our mission to promote the right solutions by connecting visionary leaders and building momentum where it matters most. It’s not about doing more — it’s about doing what matters, better.

Challenge One: Energy Transition & Climate Action

Ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply and addressing climate change holistically are essential for the well-being and stability of society.

Challenge Two: Future Urban Living

Urban spaces are centers of social interaction and development and play a crucial role in building a future-proof society.

Challenge Three: Education & Qualification

Education and qualification are the key to social cohesion and economic prosperity, since they guarantee opportunities for all social groups.

Supporting Cross-Sector Collaboration

Too often, efforts toward impact stop at good intentions. S2i is different.
It ensures:
  • Process security – clear steps, strong momentum
  • Content continuity – challenges stay front and center until results are delivered
  • Trusted collaboration – a platform where leaders from business, policy, science, and civil society come together to co-create
The Start to Impact (S2I) process is how the BMW Foundation supports cross-sector collaboration to drive real change. We act as the convener, the moderator, the catalyst. Our strength lies in designing the collaboration—not doing everything, but making everything possible. Many of today’s most pressing challenges – including the ones the BMW Foundation plans to tackle in its so-called Challenges – are too complex for any one sector to solve alone. They demand long-term commitment, deep trust, and coordinated action across business, civil society, and the public sector.Over a 1.5- to 2–year period, this process helps diverse actors move from identifying a shared challenge to developing and implementing impactful solutions. This happens within the framework of a specific initiative, such as our Collaborative Action Platform Brazil. Launched in 2024, this initiative is reimagining cities as innovative, sustainable, and resilient places ready to face the climate crisis. Focused on urban areas most vulnerable to climate risks, the platform supports local leaders and organizations by fostering collaboration, aligning resources, and scaling nature-based and climate adaptation solutions.

Advancing Solutions to Our Challenges

Across its various initiatives, the Foundation ensures process security and content continuity – creating the conditions for trust, learning, and progress. Creating process security means that all involved parties have clarity about common goals, responsibilities, and steps and are motivated to contribute accordingly. Content continuity starts with carefully identifying the topic at the beginning of the initiative. Next, it ensures that the questions posed by the initiative do not change completely in the middle of the process (thus, e.g., making participation obsolete for some stakeholders).Key elements include:
  • Defining the ambition of an initiative together with the parties concerned as well as additional experts and matching it with the resources needed to reach the intended goal
  • Establishing a rhythm of collaborative action to rapidly test solution ideas and focus on progress
  • Planning the Foundation's exit from an initiative right from the beginning to allow for a clear long-term perspective

That kind of collaboration is powerful – but it’s also complex. It takes time, shared purpose, and a clear process. That’s why the BMW Foundation has designed the S2I process to enable and advance the solutions to the Challenges it engages with. What makes it powerful?
  • We start with a clear challenge
  • We activate the brightest minds
  • We guide the process until impact is achieved
By focusing on process security in change initiatives, the BMW Foundation builds upon and expands its longstanding expertise in creating spaces for trust building. From clean tech innovation to sustainable cities and future-ready education — S2i ensures that our thematic focus areas don’t just guide our work, but connect our entire ecosystem, from flagship programs to global events.S2I enables collaboration where it’s needed most – and helps turn bold, collective ambition into lasting change.
