About Maike Thomas
Maike Thomas has served as assistant to director Markus Hipp since November 2018. Before joining the BMW Foundation, she worked for two years as a lecturer and regional coordinator in the Lectureship Program of the Robert Bosch Stiftung in Chongqing and Beijing, China. There, she was able to advance an issue dear to her heart, intercultural education and understanding, while trying to grasp the dynamism of Chinese metropolitan life. But Maike had discovered her passion for international work already before that. After completing her Abitur in small-town north Germany, she opted for a radical change of scenery and for a year worked as a volunteer in the health-care and youth work sectors in Gambia, West Africa.
During her studies of psychology in Magdeburg and Leipzig, she was particularly interested in what motivates people to act and therefore specialized in organizational and personnel development and leadership psychology. Fittingly, given the Foundation’s mission, she studied how leaders impact organizations and how this is related to diversity.
She has long had a passion for scouting, which, for her, is much more than a volunteer activity. As group head, instructor, event organizer and member of the board, she has made essential learning experiences and has motivated young people to assume (social) responsibility. She is currently active in the international cooperation of scout associations. To balance her office job, Maike in her spare time draws strength from the beauty and whims of nature.
