About Thiago Souza da Costa
After completing an internship at the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt, Thiago joined the Program team in September 2019 in the areas of Inspire and Connect. His initial interest in diplomacy and politics has evolved into a passion for initiatives promoting cooperation at the international level and change across societies. This has led him to engage with topics such as innovation, sustainable finance, social entrepreneurship, and development cooperation.
Thiago started his career in his native Brazil at the Brazilian Centre for International Relations (CEBRI), where he organized conferences and debates with prominent representatives of Brazilian society, later assisting in the coordination of business missions at the British Consulate in Rio de Janeiro. After moving to Europe, Thiago spent some time at the General Secretariat of the OECD in Paris as a trainee, and engaged in extensive research as a student assistant at the University of Kassel. Eager for new challenges, he spent three months in Tanzania working in development finance for the Savings Banks Foundation before returning to the BMW Foundation.
He holds a master’s degree in Global Political Economy from the University of Kassel, and is a scholarship recipient of the Konrad–Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). Before, he graduated from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) with a double bachelor’s degree in International Relations (politics, trade and security studies). Thiago further completed professional training at the German Development Institute (DIE) and is an alumnus of the German Federal Foreign Office and the UN System Staff College, among others.
As a carioca (native of Rio de Janeiro), Thiago loves the sea, sun, and lengthy afternoons on the beach, though he still considers the German winter to be charming and cozy. Music and languages are among his passions.
