Gerard Reid: are AI, Electrification and Digitalization opportunities for Europe?

Aug 15, 2025 - 3 min read

Gerard Reid is one of the leading voices in the field of energy transition. In a video interview during the BMW Foundation Energy Security Hub at this year's Munich Security Conference, he shared his thoughts on the opportunities and challenges for Europe’s energy transition amidst the rapid technological innovation.

With a following of over 180k across several platforms, Gerard Reid is the Co-Host of the “Redefining Energy” podcast, which explores how finance, technology, and markets shape the world of energy. He is also a Co-Founder of numerous businesses including Alexa Capital, NATO-L, and Bourbaki, and a Fellow at Energy Transition Forum and World Economic Forum. In our interview, he compares the current rise of artificial intelligence, electrification, and digitalization to the oil revolution in the 20th century, seeing it in the same way as a turning point for transformation in Europe. Both electrification and artificial intelligence have significantly impacted economies and societies, albeit in different eras. Electrification was instrumental in boosting economies during the early to mid-20th century, creating new industries and transforming labor markets. Similarly, artificial intelligence is projected to contribute trillions to the global economy in the coming decade, while also reshaping job markets by displacing some roles and creating new opportunities. This parallel highlights the transformative power of both technologies and underscores the ongoing need for adaptation and resilience as societies navigate these profound changes.

Reid further points out that the AI driven growth in electrification and digitalization is a complex issue that represents both a challenge and opportunity for Europe. That is why, in his opinion, it is urgently needed “to have deep conversations in and around the issues” with the leading experts in these fields – something that the BMW Foundation does with its Energy Security Hub.
